IS this the greatest Mario Game? |

It could very well be and that is saying a lot. Super Mario Bros for the NES, Super Mario World for the SNES and Super Mario 3 for the NES are it's competition. They all are great games, they all push the envelope and made other games better and they are all in the top 10 video games of all time. This was the first major console game to support 3-d full movement and games today are still using it's layout and gameplay style for 3rd person adventure games.
