Kirby 64 The Crystal Shards for the Nintendo 64 was the pink puffball’s first game into a fully 3D world, however it managed the transition perfectly. Instead of giving Kirby an entirely open world to run about in any direction, the game decided to stick to the series’ roots and create a more traditional fixed perspective platformer. Instead, Kirby 64 placed an emphasis on creating an unprecedented degree of variety to what Kirby could do. Just like earlier titles, Kirby gained new powers from devouring any enemy. However, for the first time he could now mix together any two copy abilities. This meant there were over 30 special power ups to be discovered by carefully choosing what enemies were absorbed. And mastering these combinations was essential to uncovering all the secrets of its seven massive worlds. Multiple endings only added to the replayability. And its multiplayer modes were a more than welcome touch. Kirby 64 was an ambitious project that never bit off more than it could chew, cementing its place as a Nintendo classic.
