You got a Retro Console! Now what?

Posted by Steven Collier on Dec. 25th, 2015

Christmas is finally here! If you follow our blog, there’s a pretty good chance that you found a retro console under your tree this year. Maybe it’s even the same one your parents threw out way back when. Whatever the case may be, you’re finally ready to put together the retro gaming collection of your dreams. However, now you’re faced with just one huge question: where do I go from here?

If your first system was an original Nintendo, you probably never knew how limited your choices were. The only games and accessories that you were aware of were the few that were advertised by Toys ‘R Us and K-Mart. But now you have the Internet, where pretty much everything ever made is up for sale. You’re likely running into dozens, if not hundreds, of games, gear, and merch that you never knew existed. As exciting as that is, it can also be a dizzying prospect.

So where DO you go from here? Well really, the issue you face now is no different than it was back then. It doesn’t matter that the holiday “Wish Book” is now a few hundred pages longer, because you still know what YOU like and we’re here to help you find it.

The great thing about the games that everyone owned back in the day is that they’re still readily available and affordable. It’s hard to go wrong with games that have withstood the test of time. What Nintendo collection is complete without Super Mario Bros. 3, Double Dragon, and Zelda? Whatever system you own, DKOldies always keeps the best sellers of yesteryear in stock.

It would take multiple blogs to even begin to describe the incredible number of controllers that have been created for retro systems over the years. They all have their pros and cons, but there’s one thing pretty much everyone agrees upon: nothing is quite as good as an original controller. Games literally don’t feel the same unless you’re guiding the action with a vintage, licensed controller. That’s why we stock entire boxes filled with refurbished GamePads for NES, SNES, Genesis, and every other iconic gaming system.

Remember how I said you’re probably discovering tons of games you never knew existed? Well, believe me when I say that there are plenty of gems you have yet to play. For instance, growing up I didn’t know many people who owned all 6 Mega Man games for the NES, yet every single one of them is a classic and well worth checking out. And those were pretty well known titles! If you start checking out some of the more overlooked games, whole universes of fun begin to open up.

Don’t be afraid to explore our vast collection of games. Whether you’re looking to relive the thrills of your childhood or embark on a new adventure, I guarantee that DKOldies has something for you.
