They say a picture is worth a thousand 5-star reviews.. So, look at that sweet box art! You got Rambo running recon behind Schwarzenegger, as he proceeds to unload a laser cannon at the monster from Alien! If that doesn’t sum up Contra, I don’t know what does! This game was every action movie the 80s ever produced, somehow rolled into one pixellated adventure of a lone soldier (or two veteran badasses, if you could find a buddy tough enough to watch your back) waging war against a literal army of Red Falcon soldiers, robots, super-mutants, and monsters from beyond the stars. Storm the jungles of Central America, bypass the security systems to secret weapons labs, and finally make your way to a literal heart of darkness, while never once letting your thumb off the fire button until the final body hit the floor. However, whether that bullet-riddled husk is yours or the enemy’s all depends on your skill. And yeah, the odds are against you. That’s how you like them, especially when you have some serious fire power up your sleeve. Flamethrowers, Laser Canons, Machine Guns, High-Tech Invulnerability Shields, and the ever handy Spread Shot make for an arsenal that would make Stalone drool. But, if that’s not enough to keep you in the fight, just remember the old saying: “When the going gets tough, the tough press ‘up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, B, A.’” If you’re looking for an adrenaline packed adventure that boasts more bullets on screen than any other game for the NES, look no further.
